Is mental illness preventable? Pros and cons

Abstract

In February 1983, leaders in mental health prevention and treatment gathered at the Florida Mental Health Institute at the University of South Florida to debate primary prevention. Participants included George Albee, Stephen Goldston, H. Richard Lamb, and Jack Zusman.  A number of key issues were raised, including proof that prevention programs work, whether the eradication of social ills (e.g., poverty, disease) will reduce the incidence of psychiatric illness, the genetics of mental illnesses, and whether federal and state monies should be focused on prevention or intervention.
