The first week in May was a very busy, productive week for the Department of Child & Family Studies (CFS)! In recognition of Children's Mental Health Awareness week May 3 - 9, a display was set up at the USF Library entrance to showcase related projects, course offerings and research activities within the College of Behavioral & Community Sciences. The display will be set up through the end of May.

On Friday, May 8, a large group of faculty and staff spent a few hours adding color to one of six cottages on the grounds of Joshua House, a program of the Children's Home Society of Florida serving children that have been significantly abused, abandoned and neglected. The cottage, previously home to young boys, is being completely renovated as a home for teenage girls. Much of the work is being completed by groups of volunteers.

“I thank everyone for the excellent turn-out and their collaborative effort to improve the living conditions for children in our community,” said Dr. Mario Hernandez, CFS Department Chair. “The activities during Children’s Mental Health Awareness week not only helped to generate awareness about the need to support children with emotional and behavioral challenges and their families. It also provided an excellent opportunity to reach into the community and support other organizations serving children.”

The Department of Child and Family Studies (CFS) is committed to improving the well-being of individuals, children, and families within communities across the country through promoting respect, inclusion, development, achievement, mental health, and an optimum quality of life.
