Congratulations to CFS’s Jonathan Wilson, who was selected as a first place winner in the 2003 International Photo Competition, sponsored by the USF Department of International Affairs. To celebrate diversity and promote cross-cultural understanding, the contest encouraged USF students, professors, and staff to share their international experiences with the University.

With more than 350 entries, awards were given in three categories: Best USF Study Abroad Photograph, featuring images of students, faculty, or staff visiting sights, engaging in social and cultural activities; Best International Landscape, Seascape or Cityscape, featuring a landmark or landscape that is clearly identifiable as an international location; and, Best Portrait, featuring people living in the natural environment or culture of a foreign land. Jonathan won in the Best International Landscape, Seascape or Cityscape category. Judges included Wallace Wilson, Director of the USF School of Art and Art History, and Edward J. Friedlander, Director of the USF School of Mass Communications and Professor of Photojournalism.

Jonathan won in the Best International Landscape, Seascape or Cityscape category. His winning photo, was taken in Karlovy Vary, Bohemia, Czech Republic. Jonathan spent four weeks in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, attending the University of New Orleans’ Prague Summer Seminars, where he studied video production and graphic design. Classes were held at Charles University, the oldest university in Central Europe, founded in 1348 by Charles IV, then Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia. Prague’s Old World charm and impressive architecture provide students with a vast array of affordable cultural activities to choose from, including: jazz and blues, opera, symphony orchestras, kammermusik, art museums, and an annual summer international film festival.

The Prague Summer Seminars are also well known for photography workshops. “I got to tag along with the photo classes for some shoots, lectures, gallery visits and field trips,” said Jonathan, “and spent time with some famous contemporary Czech and western photographers including Miro Svolik, Jan Pohribny and Michael Kenna.”

The winning photos, including Jonathan’s, were displayed on campus at the William and Nancy Oliver Gallery during International Education Week November 17-21. After, plans are to have them on display at the offices in the International Affairs Building.
