Congratulations to CFS’s Richard Briscoe, who recently received the Community Leadership Award at the Seventh Annual Harvest of Hope Awards Celebration, sponsored by the Tampa Bay Academy of Hope, Inc.

“The black tie event honored unsung heroes that have made a difference in the lives of youth and families in the Tampa Bay area,” said James Evans, Academy of Hope’s executive director. “These individuals have gone above and beyond the call of duty assisting those most in need. Dr. Briscoe was selected from the list of nominees because of his unselfish act to go inside a community and begin to help that community empower itself.”

Dr. Briscoe conducts research, training, and dissemination activities about mental health issues involving children from pre-kindergarten through adolescence, and is particularly focused on identifying the strengths of African American families and communities. He is a recognized spokesperson for minority mental health concerns and is the recent recipient of the Kente Award given by the University of South Florida for his commitment to the community. Briscoe works with the Academy of Hope’s Leadership Through Education project.

The Academy of Hope, founded in the mid 1990’s by James Evans, has assisted over 850 youth with leadership training, counseling, referrals, mentoring, job placement and scholarship development. The Academy teaches youth the skills to overcome the effects of poverty, violence, and negative influence in their lives.

WTVT anchors Kathy Fountain and Frank Robertson emceed the event, which was televised on a ABC affiliate in ten counties. The keynote speaker was Chuck Winship, president of Beef o’Brady’s. The banquet room at the Hilton Tampa Airport Westshore was filled to capacity.
