Dr. Karen Berkman Receives USF PRIDE's First Lifetime Achievement Award

Karen Berkman, PhDCongratulations to Dr. Karen Berkman for receiving the first USF PRIDE lifetime achievement award during the recent USF GALA and Lavender Graduation hosted by the Presidential Advisory Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.

Dr. Berkman has contributed significantly over the course of her time at USF to LGBTQ+ inclusion and success. She established the first LGBTQ Endowed Scholarship at USF in 2009 and has assisted in raising funds that allow for $2000 scholarships to be given to four students per year. She’s been a driving force for CISOGI (Presidential Advisory Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity), not only serving as the chair from 2006-2010, but also through her impact felt across the USF community.

Dr. Berkman's achievements include her work on domestic partner benefits, creating a website that centralized all LGBTQ+ resources, working with administration to include gender identity in the USF non-discrimination policy, and sharing her experience and connections as the group gains new officers and members across all campuses of USF.  She recently donated her CISOGI records to the LGBT Special Collections of the USF Library so that LGBTQ+ work at USF can be saved, documented, and used in the future.
